What do you think about this news story, a school in Chicago has said that either students eat what is being served in the cafeteria or they can go hungry

Yeah, so kids can eat hot dogs, chicken nuggets, and canned pears for lunch. Snort.

I understand the sentiment behind this, but I have real problems with the nutritional value of school lunches.

every friday is pizza day at my kids' school, it's gross and many kids agree..but some moms i know hold onto the belief that school lunches are better than what they could fix at home, whatever.

No kidding--just look at the picture in the article. This idea would never fly here. There's been a big push to make school lunches healthier here precisely because people realize that the staples of school lunches--chicken nuggets and hot dogs--are not good for kids, many of whom really do have to eat the school lunch because their families can't afford to pack. lunches. They've made some improvements by adding fresh fruit & salad bars at most of the schools, and the cooks are being trained to use fresh instead of processed ingredients, but there's still a long way to go before anybody here would argue that school lunches are better than what you could bring from home..

Totally agree, there isn't much at our school cafeteria that I would eat, so how can I make my kids eat it?

our kids have about 25 mins for lunch and regardless of whether you're a buyer or a student who packs you're expected to eat it.

I think it's very wrong to make kids eat the school lunch and not have a choice to bring a lunch from home.
