I really like the United Way around here as well. And if I donate through work (i.e. have money taken out of my paycheck each pay), I can even specify which organizations I want my money to go to. It's a really neat program. The local UW met its goal this year, but on WVPR, they said there were some in the state that did not.

They do get picked up and then made into rags for janitorial places, etc. They are not given to the needy who need warm coats in the winter and clothes for children.

I like to give money to places where I see where the money is going or at least know that it will be used wisely.
