I was reading about the Kansas City Secret Santa today and thought how much fun that would be. It made me start thinking what I would do if I had 40k to spare. So here are some questions.

1. If you had unlimited amounts of money, what type of Random Acts of Kindness would you do? At Christmas or otherwise.

2.

That may be true. I know around here there is a shortage of drivers. The schools and the city are having trouble finding enough drivers for school buses and snow plows because of some new industries moving in and hiring drivers for a higher rate. I think I heard something a while back about Salvation Army having the same problem.

One year when my mom was a kid, her brother was in the navy (in Vietnam) and was coming home a week after Christmas. She and her older sister and parents waited to open the presents under the tree until he came home. Her younger sister was allowed to open one present a day though.

I think that most of us know that non-profits do not = no expenses. What I look for is efficient charitable organizations that provide exceptional value to the community without excessive expenses.

I don't think I would donate to any charity that that didn't prove via 990s that at 75% went to their promised programs and services.

At last check, we were a bit short. The University, however, exceeded its goal by more than 27K (and there was still a bit trickling in.) My division, for which I was the UW coordinator, beat its goal by more than $4700!

Ahhh, checked the paper. UW is less than $20K from their goal.

absolutely -- but also do your due diligence - for example a huge part of our overhead is maintaining the circa 1890s buildings that house our theater- directly related to mission but considered "overhead' -- so it always pays to do a little digging if you're really interested in going deep with a nonprofit

I"m ALMOST to chillaxin' stage. Just finished up the cranberry salsa and mushroom salad to take to my parents' tomorrow. The Girl is packing/organizing the gifts. We just need to "pre-pack" a few things, and then we're done.

I do need to get up and run tomorrow (I plan on 5 miles) before we head out of town though.
