With the girls, I used prefolds, plastic pants and pins. I made fitted diapers for Dylan. He also wore prefolds. And plastic pants. I made diapers for Joy but put velcro on them so that Adam didn't have to use pins. I prefer pins. Toddlers can't open the pins but they can undo the velcro. Joy and I are also making wool soakers to use instead of plastic pants. She's knitting them out of wool yarn and I'm sewing them out of felted wool fabric. Both are then lanolinized to be water proof. Check out the iVillage diapering board. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppdiapers
I used cloth with my boys years ago - they are 18, 15 and 13! I did them myself with the first one and used a diaper service after that. My concern back them was for the environment and still is. The new (back then) covers made them easy to use. I could not find the service I used - apparently it is a good business to start right now - but I did find this help website - http://www.diapernet.org/locate.htm#Maine
