A school district in MA is considering offering condoms to students as young as 12, they are seeing sexual activity, STDs and pregnancy affecting kids even at this age.

My 12yo is *almost* always under adult supervision. He's home for about 1.5 hours after school (but often the 16yo is there too) and when dh and I go out (again, often the 16yo is there too), and will hang out with friends in the neighborhood occasionally ... but he'd have to be trying REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to fit sex in there.

So, basicallly, I'm with you ... lol

Yeah, my 12 y/o stays home alone occasionally, like if I'm taking one of the other kids to an afterschool activity.

My 16yo roams unsupervised. But there are always more than 2; and not "couples". They pretty much keep each other in line.

ONe of her good friends, that friends' boyfriend, another boy, and dd were here a few weeks ago. They were all four upstairs; I wasn't up there with them. The other girl's mom - who I work with - told me on the phone "You realize Anna and Ian need to be supervised, right?" I agreed, but was rolling my eyes. DD adn the other boy would throw things and groan and moan everytime Anna and Ian did more than hold hands. And my 12yo was up there with them most of the time. No way would they get away with anything with him up there - he'd be pretending to puke, etc. lol

Then you agree with me that it is possible to prevent a 12-yr-old from having sex. Now we're getting somewhere.

Yep, I think there is definitely lack of supervision involved in 12-yr-olds having sex. And that is a problem that can be addressed without resorting to chastity belts or mutilation.

At age 11 and 12 is when I started leaving my couple of kids now home by themselves for little bits at a time too, But I don't think that's what these deomographics are either.

Oh, I think its possible for 12yos to refrain from sex. I don't know that there is anything a community or school can do about to prevent all 12yos from having sex.

I didn't realize that we were arguing about whether it was possible to prevent every single 12-year-old from having sex. That might not be possible, but communities and schools can do a lot to prevent teen sex, but not if they throw up their hands and say it's impossible.

Pray tell, what community has done that?
