In an effort to make food in schools healthier, some school districts have actually banned cupcakes at school birthday celebrations.

I found this... I don't know how accurate it is, but it was the most succinct and seemed to say what the rest of the articles said.

>>From what I understand, high fructose corn syrup is a bunch of corn syrups that have undergone a process to increase their fructose content, thus making them sweeter. The reason you see it in everything from soda to cookies to energy bars is that real sugar can be expensive and it is much cheaper to use HFCS as a substitute. Plus it has a longer shelf life than sugar, making it even more attractive to food manufacturers.

In soda, it has been found that by using HFCS instead of pure sugar it can make the soda 10 times richer in harmful carbonyl compounds. According to one study, carbonyl compounds are elevated in people with diabetes and are blamed for causing diabetic complications such as foot ulcers and eye and nerve damage. Another study concluded that foods with increased fructose “produced significantly higher fasting plasma triacylglycerol values than did the glucose diet in men” and “if plasma triacylglycerols are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, then diets high in fructose may be undesirable”.<<

Getting too wordy here.. but it also went on to say that HFCS is converted and stored as fat much more quickly.

He goes on to say that this doesn't make refined sugar *good*, only that HFCS is much worse.

Don't get me started on hydrogenated oils.... LOL. I finally learned why they're bad and I'm not going anywhere near one again.

When you read the labels, are you under the impression that the grams under "Sugars" means sugar? There are certain sugars that are worse than others. Lactose, fructose, sucrose, galactose, etc etc etc would all fall under "sugars". Our bodies are made to process naturally occurring things, and have a hard time with substances that are man created. Anything with hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup is not naturally occurring, it is man made, and can not be processed as well. While you and your children may be healthy as horses, what you have to consider is these things do not affect you in the short run, they affect you in the long run. There is no maybe, they DO affect you in the long run.

Try making different yogurt dips, kids love to dip their raw veggies into dips.

Oh and my youngest loves, loves edamame (soybeans).
