In an effort to make food in schools healthier, some school districts have actually banned cupcakes at school birthday celebrations.

I just wondered why you were so vehement about having to go in late to work to take cupcakes to the school.

the newsletter we get every month is applicable for all the families at the school, not just my ds' class. if five birthdays are mentioned in our newsletter,it's likely they're not only in one class.

Keeping your muscles strong and your metabolism clicking is helpful in weight maintenance or even weight loss at any age. I am 44 and I can definitely tell the difference between exercising and not exercising, ditto for my mom who is 67 and my dad who is 76.

Besides, pancake mixes are a total rip-off. Once you get used to making them from scratch, you realize it isn't any more trouble and it tastes much better.

That's not a myth I'd ever heard. I know that extreme dieting for a child would cause malnutrition if it deprived them of mutrients they needed to grow. But children are put on physician supervised diets all the time. The "physician supervised" part is crucial since a parent could deprive a child of nutrients if they just randomly start applying the latest fad crash diet they saw on the internet to children. For example, there's one I've heard of called the "Smash Diet" (I think) which calls for a week of eating nothing but fruits and veggies. Which would be a very bad idea for a child. Then there are those "cleansing" diets that are meant to "rid the body of toxins" by consuming nothing but some gruesome mixture of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Bad idea. But children are hardy creatues and as long as the nonsense doesn't continue for too long, they will be able to bounce back. (If not, their parents will be charged with negligence-it's happened.) But the damage children suffer isn't to their metabolism, it's to their growth and development.

Exercise does help lose weight at all ages. This is not an either/or thing. At all ages, diet and exercise work together for both weight loss or maintenance of a healthy weight- and health in general.
