In an effort to make food in schools healthier, some school districts have actually banned cupcakes at school birthday celebrations.

I actually gave my dd a cupcake
<Sure possible. Just not likely. But you could send a nice letter to the corporations asking them not to use the HFCS or whatever we are talking about to make food healthier. Please let me know if they change anything.>
The question is do I have a valid point.
Yep, the ban at our school was precipitated by the fact that it was getting too disruptive and messy to have birthday celebrations for each kid.
We also say the pledge and pray.....but my kids go to private school.
I think nothing has changed for the better in the food industry. Only for the worse. You brought up MSG earlier but it DIDN'T go away. The food industry still uses it quite a lot. It went away from the news but not away from the food. My BIL gets migraines from MSG and has to read labels carefully since it is in quite a lot of things.
There is really only one thing that can change the food industry. Loss of revenue from a particular product. It is possible that those food corporations will scale back or stop using trans fats altogether because of various restaurant bans. But then again, they may just stop using it in foods they sell to restaurants but keep it in all other foods.
The food industry WON'T change its use of HFCS unless the market for it falls off sharply. They will not do it because of citizen outrage- they didn't with MSG. They will only stop using it if people stop buying it or if a law is passed literally outlawing it as an additive. Which is unlikely at this point given that it hasn't actually killed anybody. Your best move as a concerned citizen is to not buy products with it and to tell others. They WON'T stop using it as long as it's legal and gets them more money. So stop buying it and urge others to do the same. I think awareness has been raised in this thread alone so that is one battle that might eventually get somewhere.
I wish our school had a cupcake ban! My children both have acid reflux (sugar aggravates it) plus one has food allergies (milk and eggs) and in addition to the cupcakes or cake that parents bring in for birthdays, they bring in candy for treats every so often for the class (one week studying the letter "L" so they bring in licorice and lollipops).
Mkat said that her dd was never on the charts.
I've voted in every election, local and national since I was 18.
I just don't think asking corporations to do anything is going to work. That was your idea to solve the food & obesity problems. I never said that going to the school district would solve obesity problems. I said that a few parents can effect change more easily.
I also never said one person cannot make a change.
