In an effort to make food in schools healthier, some school districts have actually banned cupcakes at school birthday celebrations.

I am like many other moms...I've spoiled my daughter and given her wonderful birthday parties when she was too young to really appreciate or even remember them. (The ponies - what was I thinking??)

But I agree wholeheartedly with the ban.

My daughter and I have been reading the Little House Books and the subsequent series (Rose, Charlotte etc.). Cupcakes? They wouldn't even have a recognition of their birthday at school! Even my daughter recognizes we are so darned spoiled today. Kids don't need sugar at school...I am sure they get enough in their lunchboxes, morning cereal etc.

If we want to celebrate, fine, but make it about the child and not about what the child can bring to the class. My daughter's Montessori school has a wonderful celebration where the parent comes in with a photo from each year of the child's life and we talk about her growing up in a small ceremony, recognizing how she's grown. Granted, this might not work when she reaches middle school, but for heaven's sakes no one is going to be deprived by not having cupcakes at school. And when, as parents, we don't bring a little sanity to our overindulged children (coming from one who has overdone things myself!) we are going to really regret it later.

I say, "Don't let them eat cupcakes!"

Again, since you affirm cupcakes aren't the least bit of problem for someone to make, I fail to understand the heartache from parents who have not been forbidden from making them at home.

Why should they? You said you were going to take care of it.
