In an effort to make food in schools healthier, some school districts have actually banned cupcakes at school birthday celebrations.

thanks-- she is VERY tall and catching up to many of my friends. I'm 5'10 inches and I was this tall in seventh grade and I think she's on track to be the same so her large frame does have a bit to do with her size - but I know I have to stay on top of her eating habits relentlessly b/c like me she puts on weight very easily and takes it off with difficulty -- it's a hard job when they're 8 to walk that line between healthy eating and making sure she doens't think she's fat or think I think she's fat etc.... but I thank you for your comment.... of course I thinks he's beautiful! :-)

Wow. have you Read ANY of my posts? like the one that says she drinks nothing but water and milk? or the one that said she eats vegetables like crazy and plays soccer and basketball and dances? or the one where I talked about my own history with weight issues and how I tell her that it's about having healthy heart and a healthy boday not about being fat or thin? or the one where I talked about how when you're 8 you sometimes get mad at the world when your friends sit there eating buckets of skittles while you tear open your 100 calorie pack of whole grain wheat thins and wonder why they're so skinny and you're not. Or th eone where she came home from dance and said "momma those girls have bellies that go IN. how do they do that?" or how about the post that at 58 inches tall she's almost as tall as some of my shorter adult friends making her weight an even trickier thing to guage appropriately.

apparently not. Because if you' had you'd know that i have never in 8 years bought that chil d a bucket of chicken or a pack of little debbies . This is how women in my family are wired and it's snap judgements like yours that make it difficult for us every single day.

I've always bought non-sweetened applesauce.

Dh likes to add cinnamon and a squirt of lemon juice to applesauce - he says that's the way his mom always served it.

I dunno that I agree that foods shouldn't have flavors added, particularly when the additions are zero-sum or beneficial additives.

Cinnamon and lemon juice surely fall within those categories; neither additive is bad for you. Lemon juice adds some Vitamin C naturally, and studies are showing that cinnamon is beneficial, health-wise, as well. (http://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/10-health-benefits-of-cinnamon.html).

I certainly agree there's no need to be adding sugar or other elements that provide nothing of value to the end "product", but I can't see including lemon juice or cinnamon in that list. IMO, there's no need to demand a purity of flavor when the proposed additions bring their own benefits to the table.

Hey now my kids play dodgeball at Christian school. My oldest was dubbed the dodgeball King by the janitor/crosswalk guard! Sawyer has many blown out knees in his uniform pants that year. They play it in the recess room and I don't think it's at all cool kids against the rest but I do agree when I was growing up it was like that.

I love a dusting of cinnamon on applesauce but it never caught on with the rest of the family.
