~I'd say it's a spice.~
Yes.
Cinnamon is a spice, not a sweetener.
That's so good for your Dad!
If an overweight adult is not already excercsiing then adding in exercise along with a sensible diet will aid in weight loss.
PERIOD.
If you do not exercise will you lose weight simply by cutting calories? of course. But the long term benefits are not as great as when coupled with exercise, when coupled with exercsie the weight will come off steadier and in a more healthful fashion than someone who crash diets --with exercise, especially weight bearing excercise you are turning fat into muscle, you are changing the shape of your body and teaching it to burn calories more effectively. When you exercise regularly your normal resting heart rate gets stronger, your body works more effectively and you see a better long term healthier return on your 'dieting'
I know this from experience. From being FAT and then exercising and changing my eating habits...from working my ass off on my road bike and at the gym. If I just cut calories I'd lose weight but I'd be flabby and I wouldn't be doing anything significant for the long term health of my bones and my heart

Agreed, but for the literalists in the group, the phrase, "turn fat into muscle" is more a figure of speech than a medically accurate description of what occurs when one exercises while modifying one's eating habits.
Neither exercise (nor anything else) can literally turn fat into muscle. However, exercise, particularly weight bearing (aka strength training) can build muscle tissue. Muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue--it requires more calories to live than fat tissue does, hence building muscle helps your body to burn fat, even while at rest. Cardio exercise also burns fat, so as one adds cardio and strength training to diet modification, one begins to change the percentages of fat to muscle--the so called "fat turning to muscle", because what once was fat and jiggly, begins to firm.
The phrase above is similar to another occasionally debated phrase "muscle weighs more than fat." obviously they don't mean one lb of muscle weighs more than one lb of fat, but rather the comparison meant here is one of volume. the size of a lb of muscle is much smaller than the size of a lb of fat. And all anyone need do to verify that is to compare a lb of lean beef, with the fat trimmed off to a lb of shortening.
