I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.

Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

So is it true, if someone

< So in your opinion every rapper that uses the N word is a racist?>

I was discussing Imus' comment not rap music (can you say red herring to the issue at hand). Feel free to propose a debatable subthread and I may weigh in on the topic or not.

Again, racial comments are not a free speech issue, people can say whatever they want. But language as a weapon of racial inequality is a weapon and should be exposed for what it is and not be tolerated in a civilized society.

And you know that, how? Hmm, why would they not apologize when they were held to for judgement or ridicule when racial intolerance was exposed? Maybe they could have a "come to Jesus" moment when they realized there statements were racist. Imus, Mel Gibson made demonstrably racists statements, as did Michael Richards. Heck, even Strom Thurmand apologized at some point. I will not make a judgement on the sincerity of their apologies, because the comments were not directed at me and they did not ask for my forgiveness.

I, personally, have made statements that I've found to be racist, sexist, religiously intolerant when they were exposed back to me. Do I define myself a racist or sexist? No, but I been humbled when I examined those words and thoughts, where they may have come from and and what they meant in my world view. I have been brought up in a culture of institutional racism and sexism; my own belief system is a product that culture. I can only strive to be a better person and overcome my ingrained prejudices.

Well I am not really sure about your context posting here. Lets look at what you wrote:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-pssahwoh&msg=17699.16

So people should be allowed to call others names, negative names without any repercussion at all? No accountability for their actions, none?

Again that pretty much leaves this open to people. Are you really saying that only Imus and Isiah Washington only be held to your statement? What about others? Are they not included and get a pass?

You then later in post: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-pssahwoh&msg=17699.234 admitted that this discussion was about Imus, and never mentioned Washington.

***Yes, but the topic is Imus and his comments, which were about appearance, race and were slander.***

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-pssahwoh&msg=17699.243 This is where I showed you that you said people not Imus.

I didn't change the context....it was a conversation, a conversation about whether it's okay or not to state things about someone's personal appearance, race or religion.

Blonde jokes have been around forever. I mean look at our history of television.

Chrissy Snow...Threes Company comes to mind rather quickly. It isnt the hair color it is the mentality. Along with that comes the statement Blondes have more fun. If you are offended by Blonde jokes then I can only suggest lightening up. It really isnt an issue to be upset about.

No I believe you said..They may be...what's your point. I am asking you to clarify this statement. It isnt a red herring. It is a question that I certainly hope you will answer.

<<>>

Oh yes they are. Look at the KKK rallys. What those clowns say is protected by their first amendment rights. Just as it is my right to call those fools clowns.

<<>>

I can tell you right now if I made a statement about something I totally believe in I would NOT apologize for it. I dont think racists would apologize for the things they say under any circumstances.

You aren't going back to the beginning of the conversation, there are key pieces missing.

No, it goes back to the op, post #1 where I listed Imus as an example of the topic I was talking about, not the sole topic of conversation.
