I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.

Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

Imus firing may be news cycle related, but he was up against the ANS discovery of baby daddy, pretty hot competition.

I think that Imus' racially insensitve comments to an undeserving target, coupled with his initial non-apology apology sealed his fate in any news cycle. Its takes a lot of talking heads to fill up 24/7 news coverage on Fox, CNN, and NBC.

Is there a pre-defined list of racist words that if used indicate you are a racist? If you don't use one of those words your comments can't be considered racist?

There is a difference, in my opinion, between making a racist comment and being a racist. For example, South Park has racist comments all the time, but I don't think that the show is racist. Obnoxious, yes. Politically incorrect, yes. Racist, no.

People apologize all the time for saying racist things - after they get called on it, of course. Gosh, there are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick my favorite racist...it would have to be Jerry Falwell. And Pat Robertson comes in a close second. Gosh, I really can't decide and hate to commit myself to just one favorite racist. (A few days ago, Imus was my favorite.) Oh, well. I'm fickle.

After 9/11 when I lost a most beloved in-law and many childhood friends - all of whom were men, all married or engaged, many with children - Falwell said that the New Yorkers got what they deserved because of the gays, the lesbians, the Jews, the uppity women (feminists) and the pro-choicers:

IMO, it is racist to attack gays. Someday, I truly hope homosexuals will be in a protected class under the law just like other protected classes.

Racist to attack gays? That's interesting. Gay people are a race?

To be honest it wasnt for debate. It was a point that clearly shows the double standard here. The whole..we can but you cant or as you stated...taking back.

<<>>

That is no way is a comparison. Do you really think comparing children in this debate is valid?

<<>>

Who said there wasnt? However a racist will not apologize for racist remarks.
