I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.

Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

So is it true, if someone

I would agree with you there. However Imus's comments were not racist. Read the definition of racist. Nappyheaded ho does not fall under the definition of the word.

You're the one who commented that "nappy-headed hos" wasn't on the list. But if you don't want to answer my questions, I'll understand.

Again, this is a tactic to deflect the core debate. There is no double standard in the central debate. Did Imus make racist comments against the Rutgers basketball team? I believe I have amply demonstrated that he did.

Is Imus a black rapper? Do black rappers host radio shows that braodcast over CBS and MSNBC public airwaves. Get back to me when they do, and we can debate this issue when the rapper makes a racist comment in that context.

It is a valid argument, if not an important one - It was happening right in front of me as I was typing. People apologize all the time for things they're not truly sorry for, especially when they get caught. What's the saying, "you never meet an atheist on death row."

Strom apologized.

I'd prefer to call it homophobic, but I'd put it in the same category.

There are more definitions of racism than you've heretofore acknowledged. Imus was guilty of institutional racism. He admitted it, and apologized.

To learn more about institutional racism, you could start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institutional_racism

And yes, "Nappyheaded ho" would fall under that definition.

Oops. You're right. I meant to say that it should be unlawful to discriminate against gays. Homosexuals should be a protected class at law, just like other protected classes.

While I agree that Imus's comment was vile and racist, I don't think it is an example of institutional racism. From your link-- "Institutional racism is distinguished from the bigotry or racial bias of individuals by the existence of systematic policies and practices that have the effect of disadvantaging certain racial or ethnic groups." I don't think Imus had systematic policies and practices in place that had the effect of disadvantaging African Americans. And I do think that institutional racism is a much bigger problem than a run of the mill bigot.

That is correct. Since that was the term we were speaking of I questioned why she posted that list that didnt have nappy headed or ho on it.

<<>>

It wasnt a deflection. It was showing you yet again this is another I can you cant.

<<>>

No but these black rappers have the same power and influence that Imus does...probably more. What I am saying is that I dont understand the media frenzy and the uproar yet black rappers get a pass. Double standard.

<<>>

Get caught? DO you think Imus didnt know he was talking to his millions of fans on the radio? He didnt get caught. He said it right out in the open. If he were a racist he would not have apologized. If you want to compare a child apologizing to a man you called a racist then so be it. However it isnt a valid debate with any stretch.

<<>>

Then he isnt a racist.

I am sorry but that is hilarious. Once I got to the sentence...The term was coined by black nationalist, pan-Africanist and honorary prime minister of the Black Panther Party, Stokely Carmichael, that did it for me. Talk about racists. That is the black KKK.
