I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.
Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

I disagree. Imus used his show as a forum to validate institutional racism. The Ray Nagin bits, making fun of NY Knick Pat Ewing as a knuckle dragger, the Rutgers women as nappy headed hos, Gwen Ifill a cleaning woman.
Institutional racism is also using the media airways to denigrate a racial group by ridicule so that the group is perceived as inferior.
Really? You defined nappy and ho separately so as to show that neither is racist.
Please define racist.
Doesnt matter if you put them together or separate them. Not to mention that when I posted to her I put the term together. This is what I said to her:

So where is there a dissection?

racist
adjective
1. based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks"
2. discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion
noun
1. a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others
I'll take the bait and comment on the use of the n-word among African Americans. In many cultures, words that are meant to be hurtful are taken and used by the community they are used against in order to take away some of the hurtful power of these words. The n-word is one example of this. Another is the use of the word "queer" by the gay community. Rather than allowing this word to be hurled at them as an insult, the gay community turned this word into a word they use with pride to describe themselves.
Another thought I have on this topic is that people inside of a group often tolerate insults or criticism from each other that they do not tolerate from outsiders. For example, the Blue Collar Comedy Tour probably wouldn't be well received if it was made up of a bunch of Northern professional guys. Or I can criticize my mother's tendency to be disorganized-- but if I hear someone else criticize her for the same things, I get defensive.
I wasn't refering to post 424. I was referring to earlier posts in which you defined nappy headed and ho separately.
I believe that Imus's comments were based on racial intolerance.
