I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.
Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

What does having four girls have to do with it?
Honestly, I think you are WAY overanalyzing this.

This is really not an accurate description of how I related this to the debate at hand and I believe you know better. Go back and read what I wrote on this topic and then let me know when you are done. As for the comments about your children I dont see how that relates here.

We are right back to HD/Satellite Radio. Not to mention the millions of copies sold everyday.
<<>>
So the only young people you were referring to are under 18 or black males? I certainly know a lot of young people over 18 and are white males and females, and black females. I also know that more than just under 18 and black males listen to rap music.

Doesnt change the fact he is a SHOCK JOCK. I mean really...Stern could rebrand himself as a political pundit....doesnt mean anyone is buying it.
<<>>
Actually no. I tend to be the quiet type and do a lot of observing. You learn that being the wife of a cop. Little bothers you or shocks you.
<<>>
Sure, but that doesnt mean I will apologize for what I believe is true.
<<>>
Why would you apologize when you didnt do anything wrong?

Thank you for finally stated what is TRUE about Imus. It was a racial slur. Not a racist remark. We can stop here. The point has been made. Although it was fun. I will add that we all experience some sort of racial/gender inequality. It happens all the time.

That is exactly what you're saying - and the history of the thread proves it. It is an amateur debate tactic, trying to redirect the focus of the argument to open multiple fronts to detract from the main issue. My children are applicable, because it is the type of debate tactic they would try to use.
I believe I stated on public airways. The ground rules dramatically change for private airwaves. But you know that of course.
My statement was: "I believe the voting statistics for any race under 25 is quite astonishing." To clarify, by astonishing, I mean astonishingly low.
I am more than willing to stop. Imus made a racial slur (something by the way you've never previously conceded, you continue to insist that "nappyheaded" and "ho" is not racial slur. If you go back in the thread I been consistent in my statements that Imus make a racially insensitive comments that exhibits the underlaying subtle and insidious racism that was demonstrated on his show. He deserved to be called on it, he needed to apologize to the women he offended, and he ultimately lost his job for it.
i agree..this thread needs to lighten up..i'm so sure we all go around making blonde jokes, italian jokes, and slang like nappy ho every day. geesh!! i don't believe for a second kids are immune to language that tactful, kind adults consider wrong, either.
moreover, this imus guy was a stage. the irl perspective the black community turned it into is too bad.
I have no idea what the above sentence means, but one point to make was it was not just the Black community that called out Imus for his transgressions. It was his many of his listeners, many of his regular guests, his broadcast management, as well as the black community that ultimately forced Imus out. When we work for someone, we're accountable for our words and actions, shrug, even Imus.

Umm, no - ever hear of YouTube? That's where I and most of the world saw and heard the comments.
I don't really think this would have happened before the era of YouTube and the blogosphere. But things change and the world changes with it, and so must Imus. As he confessed, he said a very bad thing and he got canned.

To diminsh the power of that word.

I think this is a what comes first type of question . . . I see it as the word is offensive, so black people start using it to diminish it's power. Not black people use it, so why can't I?
Words have connotations.
nappy (adj.)
"downy," 1499, from nap (n.). Meaning "fuzzy, kinky," used in colloquial or derogatory ref. to the hair of black people, is from 1950.
