I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.
Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

Wow. Your posts never cease to amaze me how your views about children's behavior in traditional schools are so different from my views, observation and personal experience growing up. My own middle school/high school growing up was a private school where all of the parents expected their kids would be going to college. NO ONE was teased as far as I observed. For you to say all of my friends' parents - or my own - must have had their heads in the sand could not be further from the truth.
And I am active in my children's elementary school. I talk with other parents. I know the Principal and the staff quite well. Believe it or not, other children talk to and confide in their parents as much as your children do! I don't have my head in the sand, but I do know that teasing is not even tolerated at the school.

I hope you're not under the impression that people who find Imus repugnant are the type to play the victim. You are not the only one who has experienced rudeness from others. I think most people these days can take it and we all have pretty thick skins by the time we get to adulthood.
But when the racist is in a position of POWER, there is nothing even you can do to put him "in their place by making sure they know what they say is obnoxious." If an employer uses the c-word (yes, I knew an employer who did that) when discussing women generally or even his female subordinates, there's no way women will be treated fairly and equally in terms of hiring, promotion, raises and termination.
If the only real estate agents in town refuse to show the nice houses to the African-Americans but instead take them to the slums, they are not being treated fairly and no amount of in-your-face/take-no-prisoners dressing down by anyone will change that.
If blacks while driving properly are routinely pulled over without reason by the police, then no amount of back-talk will change the situation or make the blacks less victimized. Any efforts on their part will land them in jail.
Does your husband's profession taint your view on the Imus situation?
