I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.

You post on a debate board those comments are open to all. Surely you knew that. I would also like to add that it was just a question. I find it quite amusing that one would analyze a silly little children's saying.

So we are suppose to live in the years when black people didnt have equal rights? If that is so then I must ask again why do black people use the n word? Why does Stevie Wonder refer to himself as a nappy headed boy in one of his songs? I mean why use a derogatory term about oneself?

From my personal experience with girls this age, I would say that is mostly true. I've had two daughters that age and one who is almost there(8yo) and their many friends.

When I said "when it is used as part of an insult," I was referring to Imus's comments-- not your hair stylist's comments.

You asked if we were going to analyze this, meaning you too. You are free not to analyze it if you don't find it worthwhile. On debate boards you are free not to respond if you don't want to.

So if someone calls you brownheaded ho does brownheaded become an insult? What if they call you kinky haired ho? Does kinky become an insult?

Here's an article that offers an explanation.

Many African Americans agree with you and think it is terrible that so many young black people use the n-word word. On the other hand, if you look at the word "queer," it has become a word used by people in both the gay and straight communities in a positive way-- for example, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy or papers written on "queer culture" in academia.

But, but, but...he said it too!

Always understood Imus' context, and it still is a racist comment. The Rutgers team understood the context. Imus understood the context, and when he was suddenly called on it, he apologized profusely. He had been given a pass on all his previous racist, homophobic, and misogynistic comments in the past and he saw no reason why he couldn't get away with this one. The fact that he thought his audience was going to see his comment as funny and racist instead of just racist was an outcome that he he did not foresee. Well, this time, he was wrong. He chose his target unwisely; he cultivated an audience and guest list of well-educated, political and cultural elite and they just saw the comments as racist in this instance. Game over for Imus.
