I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.
Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

So is it true, if someone

If you will read my posts you will see that I posted the definition for you.

Sorry but whom did you hear decades ago call someone nappyheaded? Many white people in this country are related to people that owned slaves. That has nothing to do with today. So lets move to the 21st century and stop worrying what words meant decades ago.
<<>>
I have no idea. Nothing else does. I dont read slang dictionaries. The meaning of the word nappy headed is kinky hair. Plain and simple.
<<>>
Nah. If it were his comments he would have been fired long ago. It was the media attention that got him fired.
<<>>
Your choice. I will go with the definition of the word.
<<>>
They are standard in many vehicles now. So you probably will own one you just dont have to subscribe.
<<>>
I doubt it. Again every poll that I have seen indicates that he still has quite a following. Most say he should not have been fired.
<<>>
Again I doubt it. Stern is much worse on satellite. You can bet Imus will be too.
<<>>
Who knows. I dont know how prominent he was before.
Me too, I think you have to laugh at yourself if you cant's you need to learn to laugh at yourself.
I have learnid thur the years with four kids and all the "out of the mouth of a babe" moments ect, im sure you know what iam talking bout:) that you have to find the humor in life or your gonna be a stressed out unhappy person. IMO!
Btw, the post about the doctors writting, I missed the winnkie icon, I was having a blonde moment. :)
why is/was he lalowed to call rush limbaugh a fat pig"
that's not racist. Its deragotory, but not racist in the least.
" and insult arabians"
Never heard that but if it was racist it shouldnt have been tolerated either...
" but not the bb team."
What he said here was outrageously racist and sexist. It shouldnt be tolerated. It isnt acceptable for a black man to call black women nappy headed ho's either for the record.
" all 3 are consistent with the imus image..."
Then its a damn fine thing he was fired.
"can you imagine how out of context his show would be if he only used polite vocabulary? i suppose the part,if you don't like him just turn him off,is like beating a dead horse."
well I agree with that. Hence the reason I've never listened to him, or anyone like him as long as I'm in control of the radio/tv.

You posted *a definition.* What makes you think that is the only definition? Do you not think words carry connotations?
<>
Sigh. Nappy-headed has been used *for* decades-- not *decades ago*-- as a racial slur.
<>
Can you please explain how you came to the conclusion that the Oxford English Dictionary is a slang dictionary? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_English_Dictionary It is *the* most complete and authoritative dictionary in the English language. How did you come to the conclusion that the dictionary you used has a more correct definition?
Hah! you're too funny. Blame the media, ironic really, Imus was part of msm. Imus was fired by his management for making racist comments against the Rutgers women's basketball team. I'd be fired from my job if I made comparable statements. The fact that he made racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments before was probably a factor in the networks firing him, rather than just a suspension.
Interesting, the Rutgers team thinks it a racist comment, Imus thinks it could be construed as racist comment, geschichtsgal showed that that the definitive source on the English language, the OED, states the comment derogatory, and therefore a fits well within the defintion of the word when used as an adjective. On that note, I will go with the definition of the word, too.
Lets examine where the real diversion is.
No one called anyone a "brownheaded ho", so it is a classic example of a strawman. Brownheaded is not a derogatary term, nappyheaded is. You're substituting an innocuous word for a racially loaded one to prove the comment was not a racial slur. Thanks again, geschichtsgal, for the OED definition of nappyhead.

I posted the definition of the word. Yes I do believe words can carry connotations. However I dont think that applies to this case.
<<>>
I would be willing to stretch and say racial slur, however not racist.
<<>>
Sorry...I misread your post. Can you post the link from that dictionary?
