I've been thinking about the recent discussion about "opinions" and the Imus case comes to mind as an example, an extreme example for sure...but an example none the less.
Here's a link to one of the many stories about this issue

So is it true, if someone

I said I would stretch to say that it was a racial slur. However I dont think in the Imus situation it was a slur at all.
<<>>
I showed you how it could be used in a derogatory way.

I agree.

Can you please explain how you define slur?
<>
It isn't an accurate comparison. "White" is not a word that has been used for centuries as a derogatory manner. "Nappy-headed" is.
Now I'm confused-- You agree that "He may have been trying to be funny, but he used a racial slur in order to do so," but "dont think in the Imus situation it was a slur at all."
So do you think it was a slur or not?
Just making sure of your point of view.

The experience hasn't happened, therefore it's a bit difficult to be apart of it.

Actually, it's also true for some of the girls, of friends of mine.
PumpkinAngel
Ah huh.

It's fun to make fun of other people or it's fun to apply incorrect definitions to words?

<<Why does Stevie Wonder refer to himself as a nappy headed boy in one of his songs? I mean why use a derogatory term about oneself? >>
Well, basing it on the comments posted in this thread...because it's funny and when one does it about themeselves it doesn't mean the stereotype is directed at everyone else, it's not a big deal because even though they are using a generic word that implies a larger group of people, it's only about the person and the single act mentioned.

You do understand the purpose of a hypothetical situation? In theory, if I posted a list of the crazy things that my sister (a blonde) has done over the years, and then sent out an e-mail saying "For blondes, sisters of blondes, mothers of blondes, and people who know blondes," that would be fine?
<>
See above.
<>
Just as it's not true that all boys do the kinds of things that were posted in the joke you linked to. It's a stereotype.
<>
The joke plays on the stereotype that boys are rowdy and get into trouble. I'm afraid I'm not the one who condemned people for telling jokes about physical appearance, etc, and then posted a sexist joke.
<>
I'm sorry, but using hypothetical situations is a common and valid debate tactic. The joke you posted is sexist. You find it funny. That's not an implication . . .
