If you could go back to school tomorrow, for any kind of degree, all expenses paid, what would you want to study and why?

Wouldn't that be pretty easy with the degrees you already have?

It certainly wouldn't be a big leap. I would need to go through a counseling psychology program, though. My psychology degree is research-based, not practice-based. A few basic courses would transfer, though.

OK, that makes sense, although I did not realize that difference existed.

A great many people do not know that. They think of all psychologists as being therapists, but that's like saying that all doctors are surgeons.

Yes, it makes perfect sense when you have it explained. It just never really occurred to me. I thought any psych master's made you eligible to be certified as a therapist.

Nope, a degree in counseling psychology is required to be a counselor. To be a therapist you need a PhD in clinical psychology or an MD in psychiatry. Besides counselors and therapists there are also industrial-organizational, cognitive, developmental, educational, forensic, experimental, evolutionary, engineering, sports, health, quantitative/measurement, and neuropsychologists.
Therapists are able to do their job based on the available research findings. Those studies comes from all the other psychologists.

I was thinking of a counselor rather than a therapist. Thanks for all the info, good to know.

I think about this a lot-- going back to school and whether or not I want to.
