It depends. I know several wohms who could be at our school faster than any parents ash or otherwise. They work at the school. Others work at home most days or nearby.
I know several sahms whose volunteer activities take them away from the immediate area 4-5 times a week.
IME, woh/sah doesn't always indicate "availability". Sure, "on average" a sahp might be more "available" but not always.
Anecdotally, I am the emergency contact for half a dozen families. I have been called twice in 15 years. Both were sah/woh families - neither the sahp nor the wohp was immediately available.
A pickup contract is far different than an emergency contact, imo.
IME, when the parent(s) can't be reached, and the school (or other) must drill down to the next "emergency contact", that contact isn't actually making a medical decision at that point. At that point, the medical decisions are being made by EMS or hospital personnel.
"The coach immediately scooped the guy up, threw him in the back of the suburban and took him to the ER. As he was doing this, he's yelling "Someone call Chuck's grandfather. Tell him to meet us at the ER." He certainly didn't stop to call Chuck's grandfather first. *THAT* is how I"d expect my kids' school officials to react."
Me too--the only alternative being if it is better to call an ambulance instead of taking the injured child themselves.
"It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them." Caron de Beaumarchais
"i used to list my dad,my sisters in oh as emergency contact but learned a long time ago they'd be of little help in the event of a real emergency."
Sure, that's why it's much more helpful to put close friends and relatives that are in the local area and able to help locate you and know your schedule and contact numbers.

completely disagree. when alyssa's blood oxygen dropped below 90% the nurse did what all good professionals do - she called 911 and THEN called my ex who THEN called me. I would have been beyond FURIOUS if she had stopped to call ex first!!!!

Very true, I'm closer to my son's school than if I was a sahm, plus...there is a phone on my desk,

I can be less than 10 minutes away, and the school still not be able to reach me.
