Drinking with your kids: good idea or dumb move?

Is offering a casual drink of wine or beer with family meals a good way to demystify alcohol and make it less tempting in a responsible setting or is it just a bad precedent? We know that parents of tweens and teens often have to face the sticky problems of alcohol and peer pressure and we'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic!

Have you tried this approach? How did it work for you? Or do you think this is just asking for trouble?

Note: we're also looking for any families who have allowed their teens to drink beer or wine as part of a family meal and would be willing to be interviewed for a possible Today Show segment. If interested, please contact us at ivcommunity@mail.ivillage.com

My dh was raised this way, he was allowed to drink at home on ocassion at a pretty young age, he had no troubles or issues and was very responsible at a very young age. Our apporach, iam a recovering alcoholic, we are very open about addiction, i would rather they do it of front of me...than behind my back,

You would allow them to have a glass of wine or a beer when they are underage?

If and when they ask me...depending on age and circumstances,

Yes, we have used this approach, but we live in a country with no drinking age. If we lived in the US, we might do things differently.

I wouldn't do it on a regular basis, but on special occasions (a wedding, a holiday) I'd offer the opportunity.

Two years ago, I offered each of my kids a small amount of champagne on NYE. Both refused.

In some states, there are exceptions to the law with regard to drinking age.
