1. Do your kids go to school on the last day of school?

2. Do you throw (or let them throw) an end of year party for their friends?

3. How many *graduation ceremonies* will/have your children experienced in their life time?

Rice is cheap and it goes far, so is pasta.

Yep. That is why younger people eat a lot of this (besides the fast and junk food).

"Not sure who said otherwise." --------- Jams seemed to think it was an "excuse" for obesity, but maybe I misunderstood her. This is what she posted: "You can't excuse away obesity and the post I kindly copied and pasted did just that in referring to it as muscle."

I think she was saying the same as myself but she can answer for herself Laughing

If all that was wrong with the obese epidemic were the athletes that fit into the category then there wouldn't be a problem... Stop the denials and excuses and take some Dr.Phil advice, You can't change what you don't acknowledge. :)

Not denying or excusing. I - nor anyone else - here has said that lots of muscle is responsible for the obesity epidemic. My *only* point in talking about muscle was a rebuttal to springy's false statement that no one that is overweight eats healthy. That's simply not true.

Jam, I don't think anyone was suggesting that the obesity epidemic could be explained away by citing athletes' BMI.

<<Again, many healthy foods are more expensive than fast food. Not saying you can't eat healthy on a budget but for people who do not have money, it is cheaper to eat junk food.>>

No, that is simply not true. Fast food is easier sometimes than healty foods but no, it is not cheaper.

<<I agree. Many people can't garden during the winter months also though.<<

And that's why my comment also included the words, proper food storage from that garden.

<<I guess if everything is on sale but my calculations come up higher than that. While I know I can eat many things cheaper than going out, others would rather spend $1 on a box of hamburger helper than an avocado as they can get a meal out of that for their family. A head of lettuce is $1.99, more expensive then a box of mac and cheese. Not trying to justify what others might do but if you shop and see the prices, you can see why people eat more junk. <<

....and there is where education on how to eat healthy on a budget trumps this type of thinking.

There are many processed and fast food that are more convenient, but there are many healthy foods that are cheaper to prepare. It may take an effort, but when we were poor, we ate well on non-processed, non fast food. Rice, beans, pasta and potatoes with meat on special was much cheaper than any processed food or fast food we could buy.

How many years ago was this?

I could do it today. shrug.
