I have heard the terms many times. What exactly do they mean?

exempt is straight salary no matter how many hours worked.

non exempt is hourly paid.

"Exempt" means exempt from the Fair Wage & Labor Act. It's supposed to mean that you make such a high salary that you don't need the Act, which mandates things like overtime pay. In reality, though, it's often used to keep very low-wage people from receiving overtime pay.
