Fashion "Rules"

Talking about wedding guest attire has made me realize a lot of the fashion guidelines I was raised with are pretty much outdated these days.  Things like guys not wearing  ball caps indoors, women wearing white only between Memorial Day and Labor Day, no LBDs before 5 pm, and hose with every outfit are gone.  Do you adhere to any of these guidelines anymore?  Are there any fashion guidelines you DO adhere to?

I avoid the white thing, mostly because I never wear white. But, I have totally embraced not wearing hose with dresses, although my mom insisted on it. I do wear tights fairly often in the winter though. The fashion don't I can't bring myself to break is mixing black and brown. I know it is perfectly acceptable to wear both at the same time, but I just can't do it.

I don't really follow rules on this stuff, unless I am going somewhere formal and need to fit in. For social events, you obviously want to avoid embarrassing the host, for example, or get booted from a restaurant for having inappropriate attire. OTOH, that happened to my grandma once in Rio. It was the 60s and she had put on a very chic, for that time, ensemble of pants and a tunic. In an upscale restaurant they wouldn't seat her, because they did not allow women in pants. She asked for the ladies' room, removed the pants, and wore the tunic as a mini.

For a long time, I avoided hose, because I don't like the look very much. Either I wore bare legs or else patterned tights of various kinds. Now that I am old, I need something on my legs for dressy occasions, so I usually wear a small fishnet.

I have winter white slacks I wear all year and I have white denim jeans, The latter I wear starting around May but I don't wait for Memorial day. My husband wouldn't wear a baseball hat inside nor would DS. The catholic church is one of the most dress down churches there is but I still go to mass in something more decent than what I'd wear to weed my garden out of respect. When we go out to eat and unless it's fast food or a dennys I try to dress in more than just jeans and a tshirt even if it isn't classified "fine dining". I am pretty low maintenance but I do like to look nice.

I can't remember the last time I wore hose, I do wear knee highs with dressy pants as most of my socks are just sport/ankle socks I wear to work out in.

I follow not wearing white during that time, wouldn't wear all black to a wedding and probably a couple of others I don't even know I'm following.  I tend to be a rule follower.  :)

I use the fashion rules more as a guildeline, lol.  For example, I will wear white in May (before Memorial day) or September (after Labor Day) if the weather is nice.  I only wear hose if I'm dressing up.  My girls don't wear hats, and my boys don't wear them indoors (including dh).

Wait, dd16 did wear hats after she shaved her head for a friend that was losing her hair due to illness.  But, as far as I can remember, she didn't wear them indoors.  I don't wear black or white to a wedding or a party dress to a funeral.

"My girls don't wear hats," ---------- I don't usually either, but I did wear a nice hat with a huge brim recently to an outdoor luncheon. Good thing too, because the king showed up (which I didn't know ahead of time).

I wear white before Memorial Day, I will not wear skin colored hose. If I have to wear something on my legs it will be a dark color or tights. Any "knee highs" I wear are basically trouser socks or colored ones, no skin color. I will "coordinate" and not always just match. I don't match my handbag to my shoes. I don't always match my mani to my pedi.

Is there something there you'd like to debate?  What's your experience with a RCC mass?
