Fine Kids For Ditching School?

A school district in Connecticut is looking at a plan to charge students a fine if they skip school, $75 per day.  They aren't the only school system trying to find a way to get kids to show up in the classrooms.

Schools basically have two options when it comes to battling chronic truancy. There’s the positive approach, in which students are rewarded with iPads, sneakers, gift cards, and other incentives merely for showing up at school. Then there’s the flip side, in which students and parents are penalized for unexcused absences.

Do you think that either is the right choice, to reward or punish kids financially for their attendance?

I would have been in feel foo-doo when my kids were in elementary school. I ince let my son skip an entire week of second grade when he got a chance to spend a week in Italy with his cousins. I took another child out for half a day to meet Sally Ride. There are times when the classroom is the second-best choice for education. I wouldn't have used the public schools if they had had that kind of policy when my kids were young. Now that I only have one in school, and he's a junior in high school, we really do try to minimize absences because it's so hard to get caught up if he gets behind.
