Your paper/presentation (and your left nipple) rocks! I sat at a banquet recently with a gentlement who is getting his PhD in some beer-related, brewing science field. Glad I chose to drink wine so he wouldn't mock my beer choice, lol.

My chemistry instructor mentioned early on that he makes wine from grapes he grows on his lawn, but said that he'd never brewed beer but wanted to give it a try, so I thought the paper would be well received. I guess I'm kind of a suckup like that :D

DH and I used to brew beer, too, but haven't done it in ages because of the time it takes to sanitize all the equipment--as you know, that's the most important component in ensuring that you end up with actual beer and not some undrinkable brew. Hope you brought in samples to your chem class--that should help your grade!

The sanitizing bit was exactly the angle I used for the "social" impact of my paper, explaining that while most people throughout history didn't understand that microorganisms caused illness, it's speculated that the boiling and heating during the brewing process made beer some of the cleanest thing to drink during times of epidemic, making beer one of the backbones of human civilization rather than just some suburban hobby.

We use iodine as a sanitizer.

We used to use bleach, which smelled hideous, even in the small quantities required to do the job. We also learned to wear old white t-shirts when cleaning the carboys, bottles, etc. so that we didn't accidentally bleach something nice. If I ever try brewing again, I'll check out iodine as a sanitizer. It sounds less noxious.
