Does anybody besides me ever take the kids to Staples for school stuff and spend megabucks, only to discover a small fortune in used-but-still-serviceable items from last year hiding under the furniture and stuffed into closets?

Ask a teacher.
"That's why I can't understand why some parents are trying so hard to avoid being reachable during the day."
I'll explain why: because if they are at work, it is probably frowned upon for them to have too many personal calls. Where I work, some people have been reprimanded for that. It's perfectly ok to be called by the school nurse or teacher about an emergency. But lots of workplaces frown on the employees coordinating their school volunteering when they should be working.

Exactly. And then I'm asking for a refund on my school taxes to boot. The fact of the matter is a job is a time commitment. I have yet to even see a wohm, and certainly not another elementary school teacher from another district, at school volunteering this year. Only sahms. I'm sure I will. But to posture and pretend teacher*s* and a school principal are volunteering at one's school during school hours is just a little too much to believe! LOL.

Well said. But, as so many here have suggested, one also has the choice apparently to refuse to be a part of the bullies and nags dominating the PTA and complain later after the PTA does something the parent disagrees with. That's my favorite gem from this thread.
Again, no comment about the link I posted.

I haven't, so

Once again, you are wrong.

And employers frown on message board usage during work hours. Doesn't seem to stop some employees.
But I don't really buy into the wohm-party line here that wohms are "inundated" at work with phone calls from the class parent or the PTA on a daily basis. But I do know many, many wohms who spend an inordinate amount of their employer's time at work on-line on a daily basis.
