Is it really fluff, when it's the centerpiece of the board?

1. As we have some hardcore Good Morning America afficianados in our midst, I'm wondering what you think about Matt Lauer's recent question to Mary Barra.

Quote:
LAUER: You’re a mom, I mentioned, two kids. You said in an interview not long ago that your kids told you they’re going to hold you accountable for one job and that is being a mom.

BARRA: Correct. (smiling.)

LAUER: Given the pressures of this job at General Motors, can you do both well?

2.  Are you excited about the Supreme Court's ruling this week that requires a search warrant to look at your cell phone?

3. Do you play a musical instrument?

4. Best non-fiction book.

5. In light of the recent measles breakouts in the US, how do you feel about the vaccinate/anti-vaccinate debate?

6. What's your best lifehack in the kitchen?

Matt Lauer is not on GMA.

Whichever. I just know that he works for, or has worked for, one of those fluffy news broadcasts.

1. As we have some hardcore Good Morning America afficianados in our midst, I'm wondering what you think about Matt Lauer's recent question to Mary Barra. -- I really don't have any opinion regarding her.

2.  Are you excited about the Supreme Court's ruling this week that requires a search warrant to look at your cell phone? -- Excited? No. Glad? yes.  I'm more excited about the 10th (?) Circuit Courts ruling about same-sex marriages.

3. Do you play a musical instrument? -- Kinda. I had piano lessons as a kid and can still tinkle out a tune, but i wouldn't say I can play. I played clarinet in HS and can still play our HS fight song. But that's it.

4. Best non-fiction book. -- Ummm I don't really read non-fiction. So, I'd have to say "Riding with the Blue Moth".

5. In light of the recent measles breakouts in the US, how do you feel about the vaccinate/anti-vaccinate debate? - VAX!  Anti-vaxers bug the hell out of me.

6. What's your best lifehack in the kitchen?  -- I use a potato masher when cooking ground meat. Great way to break it up.  Also, I roll lemons and limes on the counter wi th a lot of pressure before cutting and squeezing for juice. It loosens all the juice up.  If' I"m going to mash avocado (instead of slice or cube), I do the same.

1.  I think you mean the Today Show?  When people ask questions like that it always make me wonder how one would answer if it was turned around?  You know, if Matt Lauer's kids held him accountable to his job of being a dad.  Does he do both his TS gig and parenting well?

2.  Eh, neutral.

3.  Not any more.

4.  I don't really read a ton of non-fiction, do cook books count?

5.  I think one should vaccinate but with education not just because a pediatrician says so.  Aka, do your homework.

6.  Learning to cook with out a recipe and/or a box mix.  It's amazing how fast you can throw a handful of fresh/frozen ingredients together and have a good meal.

1.  I guess no one has ever managed to combine successful parenting with a high profile/high pressure job before?  Or is this some kind of special question only women get asked.  No wonder I don't watch those morning shows.

2.  I like the ruling, but I wouldn't describe myself as "excited" by it.

3.  Unfortunately, no.

4.  Carrying the Fire, by Michael Collins; or whatever the title of Andy Chaikin's book on the early space program was called.  It was the basis of the TV miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon."

5.  I think adamant across the board anti-vaxxers are a little crazy.

6.  I don't know as I have one.

1. Very sexist.  Hilary Clinton is getting some of the same.  I saw an interview of her where she was asked how she could combine, being a grandmother and being president if she did choose to run.

2. Like others good news but no the the point of excitement.

3. No, played trumpet in school but could not now.

4. Best of all time?  I don't know.  I am reading  Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies.  It is pretty good.

5.   I have not done a lot of research but I think that vacination is the best choice.

6. Had to google life hack.  When making mashed potatoes, I do not peel them before putting them in the ricer.

1. Don't watch morning shows, but only women get asked questions that basically amount to this: "Which do you choose to suck at most, your job or your child-raising? Because we know you can't do both well."

2. Not excited, just somewhat relieved. I remain cynical about the idea of privacy in this digital age. Privacy has been reduced to undressing in the dark with the shades drawn or whispering in another person's ear. Anything else has a chance of being posted on the internet somewhere.

3. Nope.

4. The Bible.

5. People just need to learn a little history. Then they'd be more likely to vaccinate.

6. I use scissors for a lot of things people use knives for. Cutting pizza, cutting cherry tomatoes and grapes, cutting up fresh herbs.

2.  Are you excited about the Supreme Court's ruling this week that requires a search warrant to look at your cell phone? Anything that protects privacy is good in my book. Having recently had our privacy invaded in a major way, it is high on my peeve list.

3. Do you play a musical instrument? Yes, alto recorder.

4. Best non-fiction book.Stephen Pinker: The Language Instinct

5. In light of the recent measles breakouts in the US, how do you feel about the vaccinate/anti-vaccinate debate? I researched the living *&^% out of the anti-vax claims way back when, and had to conclude that they were mainly hysterical and balmy. The latest epidemics of both measles and whooping cough make me furious.

6. What's your best lifehack in the kitchen? I don't think I have any great tricks there. Although, a quick sauce/condiment/dressing can be made by blending herbs and spices of choice into Greek yogurt. Put a dollop on top of a pureed veggie soup and suddenly it gets a lot more intersting, but it is also great as a condiment for meats or a dressing for chicken, cole slaw or pasta salad.

Good blog post about the vax issue:

"What is far more interesting than the legal issues is how the court record in the Check case reveals the extent to which anti-vaccine activism and the spread of misinformation is fueling parents’ fears, resulting in their decisions not to vaccinate and to claim exemptions for their children. (For the rest of this post, we’ll focus solely on the Check case.)" Science-Based Medicine

here I am, checking in on vacation :D

1. When Matt Lauer can admit on camera to being a horrible parent because he devotes so  uch to work, then I will agree the question is a valid one to put to women.  Also, he's an ass.

2.  Excited? Not particularly, but a bit relieved that SCOTUS still pretends to care about individual rights as they pertain to people rather than large corporations.

3. No.

4. Hmmm, tough question.  I'm a big fan right now of Vintage Quilt Revival, but I don't know that I'd call it the best ever.

5. I think anti-vaxed kids should absolutely be excluded from school during outbreaks. And if those who cannot bevaccinated for immune-suppressed reasons get sick and can trace their illness to those who could have been and weren't, they should be allowed to sue.

6. Kitchen hack--I'll get back to you when I'm in a kitchen :)
