The Winchester House, San Jose, Calif.

This Queen Anne Victorian is notable for its sprawling beauty, but the mysteries the house holds are even more striking. Sarah Winchester began construction on the home in 1884, following the untimely deaths of her young daughter and also her husband, William, whose fortune was built on the manufacture of the Winchester rifle.

Legend has it that the ghost of William returned to tell Sarah that the family was cursed and would be haunted by the vengeful spirits of men killed by the weapon the Winchester family had developed.

Until her own death in 1922, Sarah frantically constructed and reconstructed the home, hoping to trap and confuse bad spirits. The result? A labyrinth of twisting hallways, rooms within rooms, stairways that lead nowhere, closets that open to walls and secret passageways that are enough to spook even the most skeptical folk

This style is definately beautiful. I visited people here in Alberta a couple years ago, the husband is a builder, who built a new home in this style. It was absolutely awesome, right down to the bathroom tile, faucets and decorative accents.
