On a dietary continuum from 100% healthy (not a single non-nutritive food consumed EVER, all dietary recommendations met daily) to 100% unhealthy (all processed food, no fruits/veggies/whole grains), at what point do you consider a diet no longer to be in the healthy range of the continuum? Do you consider one or two vices to disqualify an otherwise healthy and well-balanced diet as being healthy? Or do you judge the healthfulness of a diet based on whether basic dietary guidelines are followed?

i judge it based on the diet as a whole. i think that you can have a pretty healthy diet and still have some "junky" stuff in there. i think my diet is pretty healthy-i eat a lot of lean meats, fish, fruits, veggies, yogurt, etc. but i also eat a lot of white bread, dessert-type foods

Well, I think that both a healthy diet and regular exercise are a part of a healthy lifestyle, so I don't think that regular exercise and a junk food diet will equal a healthy lifestyle. But I also don't think that simply eating one unhealthy thing every day is enough to qualify a person's entire diet as unhealthy. Part of why I asked the original question was that some people seemed to think that eating white bread every day was enough to proclaim the entire diet unhealthy.

It may not make the "entire" diet unhealthy. OTOH, I do think that serving your kids white wonder bread daily and feeding them hotdogs and burgers on those white fluffy supermarket buns on a regular basis is incompatible with a claim of teaching them to "eat healthy." To me anyway, serving those breads as staples, not once in a while things, amounts to replacing nutritious staples with non-nutritious ones. It is like having kids drink soda daily, instead of milk or even water, which is at least neutral.

A cookie, some candy or soda once in a while is fine as far as I am concerned, as long as the core diet consists of nutritious food. I would not want something nutritionally negative as a staple, especially not for a kid.

Okay, I just don't see it as such a dietary problem to prefer white bread for some things. For example, if I were to encounter a diet in which a hypothetical person ate lots of fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats and fish, low-fat dairy products, exercised regularly, and ate whole grain for some things but had a sandwich on white bread every day or a soda every day, then I would just feel silly and obsessive calling their general diet or lifestyle unhealthy.

It reminds me of one time I was talking with a coworker about what we like to pack for lunch, and I mentioned that I like to take shredded chicken, and a bunch of onion, bell pepper and cilantro and fill a tortilla - quick and easy. She actually gasped and I said "What?", and she sputtered that the tortilla is full of carbs. I was like "Uh, YEAH. And???" I know the tortilla isn't some nutritional superfood, but it's not like I wrapped my chicken and veggies in nuclear waste. Some people need to CHILL (not you, I mean people like this person).
