My dd did that one Christmas. He bought me a very nice bracelet. I was like "huh" as I know how much we had to spend on each other from our Christmas budget. He said he was worked so much overtime that he saved a little each week for a couple of months.
At that time there was no direct deposit at his job. He would cash the check at the bank every week.

Yeah, but if overtime is paid cash at the regular rate, instead of paying time-and-a-half on a check, then ...
We have kind of the same set up. I take care of the finances, so I do know what DH is spending more or less. But, I don't hide anything from him. I don't tell him every little thing I buy, but as long as we have enough money he doesn't care if I spend money here or there on things for the house or my hobbies. We do talk about big purchases and expenses ahead of time.
