My kids go to a private school that has mandatory community service as part of the requirements for being in that school.

I don't think I like it either and i was over the top with dh and great he said "that is a good idea" yeah right! I will be the main responsibility in getting him to and from unless it does not conflict dh's schedule. I

They do have to do it on their own time from what iam getting out of it... as for the exact hours I don't know yet im waiting for a call back as we speak.... My older boys and their dad were selling x-mas tress last nite for a club they are in, in school it helps raise

That's a new one to me too, but my kids are still young. The horror stories I hear about how much homework kids get these days, plus extracurricular things they may be doing at that time...to have community service on their own time as a part of their grade is not something I would be happy about.

At my high school, you got a community service award if you did so many hours before graduation.

I would be okay with it if it was considered extra credit or if it is a very small amount that is required, but I wouldn't be okay with requiring a significant amount of community service and then lowering the grade of a student who simply doesn't have that kind of time.

I have heard that some schools require this, but haven't looked into it

Okay this is the info i have gotten today.. on your own time...75 hours per year to pass and or graduate.

It seems like my first grader has more homework at times then my 7th and 8th graders. Thats probably b/c i sit with him while doing homework... i do not with the older boys.
