I think our house is pretty personalized, even with no current family photos displayed in public areas (other than the fridge). You walk in the entryway to see, one the left, mass-produced prints of collages by an Asian artist. Both my husband and I lived part of our childhoods in Japan, so those collages are stimulants to as well as tributes to memories of our childhoods. Even though there were lots of them produced, we bought one from a gallery here in town that only sold about a half dozen of them, and they were each custom framed. We liked the artist so much we went and looked him up and bought a second, complementary print. The other wall is our Wall od Dead Family Members. These aren't unique at all because every time I have a photo restored and enlarged & copied in sepia, I send copie off to all family members. So, for instance, the photo of DH's parents leaving for their honeymoon hangs in five homes already and will presumably eventuaaly hang in nine. Along with the photos I hve framed antique postcards showing townscapes where the family lived or, if available, photos of the family home. As you. Come further in there are two original oil paintings of the Tuscan countryside, both because DH and I love to travel in that region, and because the colors are beautiful and repeated throughout our home. A little later down the hall is a framed antique map of Normandy, both because I study that region professonally and as a reminder of the summer our family rented a cottage there. I could have just put up photos, but to me the mixture of evocative artwork is both more beautiful and more interesting.

We had a professional photographer, but did not order a big portrait of us.

That sounds plausible. It is so long since I read it, that I can claim to remember. Like sickle cell, thalassemia is an adaption to counter malaria. If you just have one gene for thalassemia, it will protect you against malaria, the problem comes in if you have two genes.

Growing up, my mom kept all of the family photos on the dresser in her bedroom. Once we moved out, she put together a couple of those frames that have pictures of me and my sister and brothers from K through 12. But, they are in a hallway away from the living room. The main ones she displays in the living room are as Lois puts it "dead people" and her grandkids.

I really like a couple of the paintings they have though and think they are more personal than the photos. My mom bought a picture painted by an artist who lived a couple doors down from us growing up. She moved away, but for Christmas one year, my mom asked her to paint a picture of my grandparents' barn shortly before it was torn down. It has great sentimental value for my dad.

I'm glad to hear that. IME (and I have a lot), the framing done at Michaels and HObby Lobby is adequate, but not interesting or personal. I don't think they put a lot of thought into the selection of mats and frames, etc. Going to a smaller shop will often get you better service, as well as an artist's personal touch.

I use a local guy whom I have used for many years. He jokes that he gives me "frequent framer" discounts. However from time to time Michaels has very good dealls, and I will have something done there. The framers there are very good, and they do have that artist's eye that can make all the difference between ordinary and Wow!

That sounds like a really awesome gift! I love homemade gifts. Last year I made most of the gifts I gave to people. This year, I didn't make the time to do it.

"This year for DD1 and her boyfriend she is taking pictures of different things in the town that they live in that have some significance to them and making a collage out of of them."

That's a neat idea. Dh likes to photograph, and he often takes portraits of the various people in the neighborhood, mostly the shop keepers. He has been doing it for years, and I really want him to collect them all and do something with them. I think they would make a nice visual history of the neighborhood.
