While I do find it a bit incongruous when grown women use terms like BFF and bwahahaha and LOL followed by multiple exclamation points, ii find it childish and petulant for a grown woman to do more than remark about other's use of the terms in passing.

Yep. We all have our little quirks. I do find it a bit ironic that the same poster who uses the multiple exclaimation points...on a regular basis, would begrudge anyone the use of bff on a message board.

Really? I'm admittedly really old, and there are all equally net speak, including "irl".

As a designer of social networking software, I please share your insight. Because IMO, your mileage is exponentially off

O.kay...who said they did NOT have a best friend? The point was that, IME, you don't need to identify a "best" friend to other people when you are an adult, like a 10 yr. old would do.

IME (oh, excuse me. In my experience) a 10yo often identifies multiple people as her best friend. And that best friend may change from day to day (or hour to hour!) And that "best friend" status is based upon things that are often pretty socially based or superficially based.

I think what makes my BFF my BFF is a lot deeper than what makes a 10yos friend her "best friend".

Why do you need to identify DH, or DS, of DD, then? Netspeak conventions in context (make you look a little foolish).

You said, "Ehhh...IMO, there is no difference-shrug."
If you don't think that there is a difference between a best friend, and any other girl friend, that would explain this response, as well as your insistance that "bff" is inappropriate for an adult to use. As has been pointed out many times, it's like using other short hand for commonly used terms and phrases on message boards. One of your favorite being "lol".

Why would you consider it to be "belittling" someone by calling them a girlfriend? I never said the relationship should be treated the same as some other girlfriend relationships. I just don't think a grown adult needs to go around telling everyone they have a best friend like a 10 yr. old would-lol!!

Not only that, but if I say that my girl friend did this today, and that tomorrow, I'll get 3000 posts in response accusing me of lying. But if my girlfriend did this yesterday and my bff does that tomorrow, there is a clear distinction between the two.

Why do you call your husband your husband, and not just your male friend?
