Why can’t you just use your credit card?

Cash can be seen and touched and kids get that, usually at an early age,

That's why I love having dual units. We can set the upstairs to stay pretty warm at night, andleave the downstairs (where we all sleep) pretty cool.

Oh ok. Those things would be included in my budget and minor things like stamps would come out of my pocket money.

Do you mean you're on an "even billing/budget billing" plan with your electric service provider?

Because just havinig a budget for electric doesn't mean you hit that number every month; it's not something you have that level of control over.

Our food budget varies because our menu and tastes vary and our schedule varies. If I'm out of town dh and the kids will eat out more and our grocery bill will be less. When the kids have lots of activities, we out more adn the grocery bill is less. During the summer our grocery bill goes up because we grill a lot of things like steak and seafood, and eat a lot of freshly grown (farmer's market) produce, that are more expensive than we might eat in the winter.

It would drive me crazy to have hundreds of budget categories to look at each pay period with $5 or less devoted to each of them.

How can they be in your monthly budget if they're "unusal" and not recurring? Or do you estimate those by looking at past history and annualize them out? I can see that with auto repairs or pet care.

But things like tickets for a play your kid is in?

Yes, the bill stays at one price for the year. They will recalculate it at the end of the year. We do have to pay about $10 extra that last month but it will go back down. We don't have a large home though.
