Why can’t you just use your credit card?

Cash can be seen and touched and kids get that, usually at an early age,

Believe me .. I know very well how much is a doable mortgage payment and what isn't. I don't need to compartmentalize my free money to know that.

Yes, we clearly had no idea what we were doing when we got our mortgage. That's why we've run up our credit bills over and over again and had to refinance our house to incorporate that debt when it got to be too much. Too bad we don't annualize and categorize all of our expenses. Oh wait, I forgot, that wasn't me.

Hey, me too! I've been completely in the dark wrt finances ... and that's why I have an 815ish FICO score.

Yes, we buy quite a few things in bulk. We bought 8 frozen chickens this summer. We're getting beef in bulk in a couple weeks. We're also planning on buying a half a hog this fall, if we can find one. The kind of stuff we buy in bulk is still more expensive than chicken nuggets from Costco.

I think probably one of the reasons we don't have to budget down to the penny is that our mortgage is really reasonable. We got it pretty much on one income. So as our income has increased in the past couple of years, we've gained a lot of wiggle room.

Yep. I think you've got it.

When I was single, and when dh and I were first married, things were much tighter. We didn't have a lot of disposable income. I didn't "budget" then, but I tracked all my expenses and watched things very very closely. Now -- not only is our income significantly higher and our debt lower, but all that frugality let us build up room to be able to not have to worry about the $20 pair of shoes I bought spur-of-the-moment last month, or the $150 donation to my brother's campaign.
