Returning to work after being a SAHM for several years. What do working moms do about teacher work days and other holidays that are not recognized by your employer but your child has off from school? I won't have enough vacation/personal days to cover the various holidays my child will have.

Our dcp's have always been open to cover any of those days that I wasn't off. I've never run into a problem with getting care on a teacher workday or school holiday.

I would think you would have to pay someone, either a friend, or a daycare with a drop-in program. i dont know what else you could do. when my kids were too young to stay home alone, dh and i alternated taking pto days.

Most of the local dc centers/preschools provide services for the ES aged kids on those days. Usually they would organize some sort of age appropriate field trip for the kids (ice skaing, aquarium, zoo, arts and crafts place, movies, etc) that would take up the bulk of the day. The rest of the time the kids stay at the dc center. Most of them also do aftercare so they are set up with stuff to entertain the older kids.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered daycare centers, I guess because I never used one. DS attends a private school, so his holidays are not always the same as the local school district. DH and I will not have enough personal/floating days to cover all his holidays. Luckily, his school does offer an excellent after school program, so we are covered for child care on school days. This is one of those things I never even thought about as a SAHM!
