How many times have you moved?

I'm just curious...this is DH and my first move since we got married 6 1/2 years ago. Statistically, the average household moves every four years--I can't imagine doing this every four years. I'm in hell right now and I'm not even completely packed up. I'm dreading the next two weeks. Absolutely dreading it.

My parents bought their first house in 1967 and stayed there 21 years. They've been in their current house for 16 years. DH & I have been here 6.5 years and will probably spend at least that, probably longer in our new place. Are we wierd? How often do you and your family move? Why?

I have moved 20 times. Two homes with my original family, 17 military related moves and we moved here 5 years ago when DH retired. I am really glad to have put down some roots.

Dh and I have been married since October 1990 and in that time we've moved. . .um, seven times.

We've been married since August 1990, but we lived together for a year or so before that. So if you count the time we spent living in sin ; ), then we've moved 4 times. The first move was from our college town to the city we live in now. Then we moved to a different apartment when I started law school. When I finished law school, we bought our first house, and then about 4 years later we built this one. I got pregnant with dd#1 while this house was under construction, and we moved in 4 days before she was born. Oh, and I guess there was sort of another move - we sold the old house before this one was finished, so we moved in with my parents for a couple of months. We refinanced last year at a great rate and have no intention of going anywhere else for a long time.

Btw, I'm surprised your mom got divorced and remarried while living in the same house. Both dh's and my parents sold their homes when they got divorced, as have pretty much everyone divorced couple I know.

I've been in my condo for 15 years which is more than twice as long as the next longest time I've lived anywhere.

Lessee:

1st house in IL: home from hospital; moved just after my 7th birthday.

2nd house in IL: from just after 7th birthday until summer I was 12.

temp housing in Germany: summer I was 12 until november (still 12)

apartment in German: November (still 12) until summer I was 15.

3rd house in IL: Summer I was 15 until I joined the army after high school graduation (I was 18)

Basic Training (NJ): July 79 until Aug 79

Language Training (CA): Sept 79 until Sep 80

Advance Training (TX): Sep 80 until Dec 80

Barracks in Germany: Jan 81 til summer 82

Apartment in German: Summer 82 until Summer 83

Apartment in VA: Summer 83 until Summer 85

1st Apartment in MD: Summer 85 until Dec 87

2nd Apartment in MD: Dec 87 until Dec 88

Condo: Dec 88 until now

Now, some of these moves were really sort of in transit travel/temporary things (basic training, the 3 months in TX, etc.), but they still involved considerable packing/unpacking and logistical nonsense.

Ideally, if I move again, I will leave the bulk of my belongings behind ;)

Editted to note that since my going to Basic Training move, my parents remained in that 3rd house in IL until summer 82, then:

1st house in VA: summer 82 til Dec 88 (or Jan 89, I forget)

2nd house in VA: Dec88/Jan89 til summer 90

Apartment in VA: summer 90 til spring 91

2nd apartment in VA & 4th house in IL: spring 91 til summer 93 (They had planned to retire from the civil service but Dad's retirement was denied once the first Persian Gulf War began but after they had bought the house in IL, so Mom retired and moved into the IL house and Dad stayed in VA, but in a smaller apartment, until he was permitted to retire)

4th house in IL: summer 93 til now and they're thinking of selling this house and buying a condo (physical issues not present when they bought this 4th house to retire in).

My mom's story is long and complicated and nealry requires timelines and graphics to fully follow. . .

Suffice it to say that she 'got' the house in the divorce settlement.

My parents still live in the house my dad built when I was two. That's 34 years. I lived there for 23 years. Moved in with a roommate for a couple, met DH, moved into a rental house for one year, bought our house and have been here 7 years.

Don't plan on moving any time soon. I am a home body. My parents live 5 minutes away. In laws are 40 minutes away.
