How old were your children before you started to allow sleep overs?

It depends on how well I know the child and the parent.

Dd had her first sleepover at about that age. But I knew the parents very well.

Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color.  Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable.

My ds turned 6 in April and he was allowed to have 3 friends sleep over.

I think it depends on how well you know the other parents and their rules and house setup.

I am not big on sleep overs and either are my boys. They have slept over their friends' houses once each and neither likes sleeping over at other peoples' houses. They've each had 1 or two friends sleep over our house in the past, but I do NOT encourage it. I like my privacy and my boys like their own beds. I really don't have advice to you because I am not a big sleep over proponent.

However, if you're not comfortable about it, I'd just tell her she can't. She can whine and cry all she wants, but in the end your peace of mind is more important IMO.

I would absolutely *not* allow my kids to spend the night at anyone's house i didnt know well. too risky, imo. they would have had to play many times before the sleeping over began. im not a big fan of sleeping over, although my kids loved it and did it quite often as they got into jr high and hs, but when they were young, no way. at 5 or 6, i would just not go for it, unless it is at your best friend's house. jmho
