I certainly didn't feel smart at the time. It's only in hindsight that BTDT mom seem smart. Like I sait that worked for me and made sense. I certainly don't think clearly in the midst of anger (or other strong emotion) so why should I expect my children to.
Then you have to find it. It took me years to understand that what to the rest of us was just an unexpected treat or detour meant that the world was ending for Erica and that someone yanked the rug out from under her. To borrow from Criminal Minds, you have to find the stressor (stresser? sp). Keep a log of when she melts down. It could be she's tired, hungry, thirsty, you did too much that day (one too many errands, to many play dates in a row), something happened or didn't happen that she wasn't/was expecting, you didn't do enough that day (the weather meant that you stayed inside instead of going out).
I used time-outs with both Andrew and Jenna (alyssa is special needs and has never needed nor earned a time-out, LOL!). Both kids would go to sit at the kitchen table. They were not happy about it (and oftentimes very angry) but neither refused to go sit.

I am coming in late, and you've already received a ton a great info.
It can (and should) be very simple: "You are not allowed to hit mommy, go have a reset."

Exactly. And with the added benefit that it gave me time to cool down and think. Especially with Erica. That girl really knew how to push my buttons.

I appreciate everyones help.
BTDT as well. It was either shut myself in the bathroom or kill Erica. We both got a time out that time.
