iVillage Flash Poll:

Is it Acceptable For the President to Say Ass in Public?

On the Today show on Tuesday, President Obama used the word “ass” (more specifically, he talked about wanting to “know whose ass to kick” about the Gulf oil spill). And it’s created quite a buzz...

Huh? How does that follow?

Weird that you would give me an eye roll for that . . I did not say anywhere that he should be influenced by the media. I did make an observation that it looked like he said the comment in response to the criticism.

I also said it was more than one network. I guess you are confused?

That was my point. The sentiment is the same, but in changing the word you use, you eventually change the sentiment. You start out thinking the swear word, but say its more socially acceptable version, and eventually, you're not thinking the swear word. That's what I meant when I said that God honors your effort to change.

"Does God have a list of words?" This question suggests that you think I'm making up God as I go and that I kind of guess what I think a divine being would require. Nothing could be further from the truth. His entire written revelation to us is in the Bible, which you can find at any library or bookstore.

That's what I said. Go back and read my post. My point was that if you recognize a sentiment as offensive, you'll use a less offensive word to describe it and eventually, the sentiment itself will become less offensive.

I guess I'm not seeing how using a different word changes the sentiment. If I say "I want to kick his butt", I am not saying anything meaningfully different than "I want to kick his a$$". The sentiment is identical. I would say the same about "Oh shoot" and its counterpart.

Try it for about a month and see. Every time you want to say "@$$," say "butt." Pretty soon, you'll soften your attitude. Then, when you say "@$$, you'll notice a huge difference in feeling.

Does that mean if I am giving a Sunday School lesson about Balaam that I have to refer to his talking butt?

I'm reasonably sure it's an insult to God to lump words like 'ass' and various other scatalogical terms into the category of "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain."

Bwa! You make a good point. Meanwhile I am still trying to work out what the secret solution to the oil spill is (alluded to somewhere up the thread).
