My fourth child just *graduated* from kindy, but this is my first experience with it.

It is not common here for our public schools.

I don't know what is common here as we did not live here when my DDs were that young. They did not have kindergarten grad where they did attend kindergarten. DD1 had a 5th grade graduation, the other two did not have any aside from HS.

Where I attended school they had kindergarten, 8th grade and HS graduations. I graduated high school the same year my younger sister graduated kindergarten so we have some very nice pictures of both of us in our graduation caps.

Dylan had an in-classroom end of year party in Kindergarten. He had a graduation ceremony, sans gown and cap, for 5th grade. In our district, elementary school goes K-5th, middle school is 6th-8th and high school is 9th-12th. His charter school is K-6th for elementary, 7th-8th for middle school (both at the same campus), and high school is 9th-12th at a separate campus. So Dylan graduated out of elementary school from one system and reentered elementary school in another. The charter school only had an end of year class party for 6th grade. They had a graduation ceremony for the 8th grade.

The girls didn't go to Kindergarten. They started public school in 8th, 6th, and 2nd grades. Erica had a 9th grade graduation. Now, I'm drawing a blank about if Joy had an 8th grade graduation or not. Or if Erica and Angela had 6th grade graduations.

The kindy graduation for my kids sounds similar to yours. The kids wore a grad hat and sang a couple songs for the parents. The girls dressed up in dresses and the boys were dressed nice, maybe not quite in suits. It was held though in the kindy classroom mid-day and parents attended, I don't think there were many extra relatives. Although I think my dad attended my younger dd's graduation. He had retired and had time to go to some school things. There was some food afterwards but I didn't consider it a big party, just some food and the kids could say goodbye to their friends and their teacher and then leave with their parents at the end. I don't remember balloons & flower presents for the kids.

Ours is held because the graduation thing for the 5th graders is in the afternoon.

Sadly, yes. It makes my eyes roll. I'm also not big into 8th grade graduations. I think they trivialize real graduations.

I *sort of* get the preschool send off...and I get the 5th grade (or rather, elementary to middle school)..but I just don't understand the kindy thing.
