1. Will you be shopping on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
2. "5 months of bills...." as the song says. Do you have a budget for the holidays or do you have "5 months of bills..."?
3. What is one food that most people make for Thanksgiving that you do not like?
4. Do you dress up for Thanksgiving?

I think that baking and cooking are things that are better to learn from someone, rather than a book-- and more enjoyable as well. I think that most 12 year olds should be able to look at a recipe and know that to cream the butter and sugar means that you need to soften the butter, add the sugar and mix until combined. And that you mix the dry ingredients separately and add them to the wet ingredients. I figure as a parent, my responsibility is to teach my children how to do things. Cooking is one of them. Ideally, by the time my kids move out as young adults, they will know several basic cooking techniques and recipes. That way they won't end up eating frozen pizza and ramen (or at least they'll have the choice not to, lol).
I don't think I am the only influence in my children's lives when it comes to cooking either. My dd is taking classes in middle school right now. She is always welcome to help me or make whatever she would like.

It can take longer to wash, dry, fold and put away a load of laundry than it takes to make cookies.
Could your DD make a batch of chocolate chip cookies by herself? Has she made cookies (from scratch, not a can or package) by herself before?
<>
OMG! You make her turn her clothes right side out before she puts them on? You're stealing her childhood!
<>
Since cooking and laundry are out, what kinds of things do your kids have responsibility for?
It can go the other way too: (not saying this is EXACTLY what I would want but you can get the idea).
If I didn't have the responsibility of a job, I wouldn't have to get up everyday and go to work and deal with all the stress. If I didn't have the responsibility of being a parent, I wouldn't have all the stresses and would have more money. If I didn't have the responsibility of paying for and maintaining a car, I would have more money.
I can see that. I don't bring out the good china when it is just the four of us. Heck, I don't bring it out when I have more people-lol!!
Gotcha. My kids get up so early.-lol!! (at least my ds).
Follow the thread and you can figure it out.

Yes. It was a hypothetical.

Good. We agree. I didn't say, nor do I think, it's better for everything. But better overall.

Because I responded differently. Because my desires and wants and needs were different. Because my personality is different. But also because my parents' lives were different. We were a much different family when there were six of us than when there were four of us. Which was quite different from when there were three.
My sister falls somewhere in between. She's mostly independent, but her life is far different from mine ... and far different from my brothers' as well.
