1. Will you be shopping on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

2. "5 months of bills...." as the song says. Do you have a budget for the holidays or do you have "5 months of bills..."?

3. What is one food that most people make for Thanksgiving that you do not like?

4. Do you dress up for Thanksgiving?

I think if you are someone whose interests fell in the mainstream for your peer group, and who did not develop interests in things that are stereotypically "adult" interests, it is easy to assume that a child cultivating an interest in such a thing is adopting the parents' interests or is being influenced by the parents. For many people, the typical childhood interests are mundane even during childhood, and the interest in more mature activities and topics comes naturally, not as a result of the parent pushing that interest. That was the case in my house. My parents often learned about things right alongside us, because we had expressed the interest and they were willing to let us take the lead in developing our own hobbies. It was not living vicariously. Often, our expression of interest was met with a groan first, and encouragement five minutes later.

KA, I can SO empathize withyour parents' groan followed by enthusiasm. About a week ago our little space enthsiast came to us to tell us that he had won a lottery and gotten four free tickets to go see a panel of astronauts including John Glenn. The only catch was that this "free" event was taking place about 600 miles from where we live! My first impulse was to say, "Are you crazy? Do you think we can drop everything and just spend a whole day driving to Ohio and a whole day driving back just so you can meet John Glenn?" Lucky I thought before I spoke, and remembered that Glenn is close to 90, and we didn't really have plans for the weekend anyway, so why not? We went to Ohio, and the kid met John Glenn.

But wait, now I am confused. Aren't you supposed to forbid anything like that and push him to be interested only in the things that you find utterly fascinating?

I cannot keep track of the rules. All I know is that teeny-bopper music is good and anything parents like is bad, and if the kids like what the parents like they are brainwashed but if the parents like what the kids like then the parents are living vicariously through the children so you are supposed to suck it all up and grit your teeth though the inane things because your kids come first. And you are supposed to delay your childrens' entry into adulthood for as long as possible because evdently adulthood is some grim and joyless place where no one wants to end up.
