1. How long is/was your child's school day (minus any after school activities)?

2. Who are you rooting for in the Superbowl?

3. What did you have for breakfast today?

1. I have no way of knowing if these kids take PE as well.  They're not my kids; I don't know their schedule.  PE isn't a guarantee that kids won't be overweight.

I didn't say band is an alternative to, or equal to PE. Just that many kids that are in band don't "need" PE.  It is not a passive class.

IME, band was much, much more active than any PE class ever was.

I agree but I also think it is good for kids to have to take it even in high school.

I've spend extensive time around the kids during and after practice.  The band room smells worse than a locker room with all the sweat, lol.

I think it is good for some kids, not all.

Physical education is as physical as any other class my kid take, Lol.  A close second might be science lab.  Band is a total extra, I've never seen it cut but I've never seen it replace a class either.

Band IS a class here.   It doesn't replace any classes, unless one has to choose between it and something else that 's only offered at the same time.

Science lab is physical? in what way?

I think every kid should be active every day. Kid who bicycles back and forth a six mile round trip almost every day or who plays competitive tennis might be better off taking an extra science class than taking PE. A kid who is mostly sedentary might need PE.

The Boy could benefit from PE. Unfortunately, in MS, PE was paired with vocal music - if you took one (one semester) you had to take the other (one semester), so we opted out. In JH, it is an option, but we wanted to get his HS Spanish credits out of the way instead. Next year it won't be an issue, as he'll be in marching band.
