When DD is old enough for a computer, she'll probably end up using my or DH's hand-me-down laptop.

totally worth every penny.. .it was her big Christmas present - pretty much only one - this year.  We got it at a significant discount thanks to a friend who works for Apple, and I had a friend who is a liscenced Apple tech come and set everything up for her, her email , icloud, install the office suite (word, excel etc.. ) and copy over my itunes library to her computer (we share an apple id for itunes)... we even put ap hoto of her and her best friend on the desktop and then repackaged it as if it were new... seeing her face when she turned it on and saw it was all set up was the best part of the whole gift..  I would much rather invest in the stabiliyt and longevity of a macbook with its defenses against viruses and the fact that she can take it to college in four years..I'm relentless about regular updates and maintenance on both our machines.... it was the absolute right move..

When I was in elementary school, Apple had partnered with the local grocery stores to donate computers if the students brought in receipts from that store. We loved, loved, loved playing Oregon Trail. My dad bought our first computer when I was 5-- a Tandy 1000. He still has it, and it still works! I love my iPhone, too. I'm considering an iPad, but haven't made a decision.

We better be careful, or Lauren may change the cat's name to a symbol and we'll all have to refer to him as the cat formerly known as MacIntosh.
