I figure all parents are fools for their kids and we all express it in different ways, some of which are bound to be obnoxious/annoying/grating to others. I would simply politely, but with some persistence, try to change the subject. Most people have something worthwhile to offer, and when faced with someone like that I make it a game for myself to discover some good side about the person.

Gifted Children come with their own set of fun issues, I can assure you.

I'd just title this obnoxious mom! It doesn't matter if your kid is gifted or not, but a mom who goes on & on about their kid non-stop is obnoxious.

I'd probably bring a book or an ipod or plan to go sit in my car for some "alone time" to get away from the obnoxious mom.

As soon as the whether gets nicer my DH is going to meet me for her Tuesday night class so we can get a good cardio walk in together.

No, reading at 4.5 years old is not definitive proof of giftedness. OTOH, there are GT kids who do start reading around that age. IOW, she may have reasons other than the reading for saying that or she may just be really floored that her kid is reading. It happens. Maybe learning to read was a struggle for her. Maybe her dh is dyslexic and she was worried her son would be too. Who knows.

I think it is hard to listen too as her children are very poorly behaved.

I am sure she is obnoxious, not saying that. But if you can find some connection point it can be easier to bear.
