My dd is going on her first 'grown up' trip this weekend.

How old is she? I got on that bus with my friend when I was 17 years old. I would not recommend anyone younger than that traveling alone!

Do I think something will happen to her? Probably not. However, some of the people that ride "that" bus are sketchy (and that is putting it nicely...LOL!) The bus stations were nothing to write home about either....some were quite dingy.

When I was in college, my bestest friend came out to see me for a few days during her spring break. So, she was 18 at the time. She took the bus round trip from Salt Lake City to Chicago w/o any problems. I remember picking her up/dropping her off at the bus station, and it had a lot of interesting people! But I think it is safe overall. Make sure she keeps her wits about her. Maybe tell her not to get off at stops that are not very big or well lit. Hell, I'd tell her to sit up front by the driver on the bus and stay close to the driver at stops, but that's probably too "overbearing motherish", lol. She'll have her cell phone, that is good. Get her a can of mace/pepper spray in case she needs to use the restroom at one of the stops along the way. I'd say that she'll probably be fine, but remind her to be aware of her surroundings all the time!

coming from a person who traveled greyhound regularly as a child to see my g'parents a couple hours away, my answer would be for your dd....no way in h%ll would I let her go alone.

Not because it isn't safe (I do feel it is), but because she has never done something like this before AND she is going alone.

Personally, I worry all the time (I know it's not healthy) so I would probably opt for the drive. Maybe if you decide to go that way the sister could meet you part way or something so the drive won't be as long. Just my thoughts (but like I said I would probably be over worried, so it depends on how you feel) I also tend to go with my instincts a lot, so that would make a big difference to me. I could never forgive myself if I went against my instincts and something bad happened as a result. Good luck.
